Are you passionate about books, local history, or libraries? The Gibson Library Society is looking for dedicated volunteers to support the smooth running of our activities and help us preserve and promote our unique library collection in Saffron Walden.

We are currently seeking volunteers for a variety of roles, including:

Reading Room Assistance

  • Welcoming visitors and assisting members of the public with basic enquiries
  • Offering friendly support to those exploring our collection

Conservation Support

  • Cleaning books
  • Helping to prepare books to go to a binder or conservation

There are many other tasks needed so any time you can spare would be appreciated.



What skills do I need?

Ideal Background (not essential)

  • Experience in a library, archive, or museum setting
  • A love and understanding of books 
  • Volunteers with a good knowledge of Saffron Walden and the wider Uttlesford area are especially welcome

  • Accessibility
    Access to the 1st floor Saffron Walden Town Library Reading Room is accessible (lift, level access). There are 3 steps with handrail up to the adjacent book store. There is a flight of stairs down to a further book store in the cellar. Parking (pay-and-display, some free - including disabled parking close to the library building) is avaliable in the centre of Saffron Walden.
