Help with Horse Riding for the Disabled

For Barrow Farm Riding for the Disabled

Register your interest

Barrow Farm RDA is a wonderful environment, where our riders and drivers can achieve amazing things with the support of our coaches and volunteers.

We offer riding and driving to 130 children and adults with disabilities and additional needs 6 days per week. Many of our riders have severe and complex needs and may require up to 3 volunteers to help them enjoy the benefits from their ride.

The smiles and laughter can make it such a rewarding experience for everyone.
Most volunteers start with side walking, which involves encouraging the participants, and making sure they keep their balance on the horse. Some volunteers progress to leading the horse, and preparing the horse for the ride. We also have some opportunities to help with our Tea with a Pony sessions which are aimed at people living with dementia or similar conditions. Training will be provided for all activities.

The minimum age to volunteer at Barrow Farm RDA is 13, there is no upper age limit. We look for a regular weekly commitment, so you become part of a team of volunteers who support the same participants each week.

We love showing prospective volunteers around so we will arrange an appointment for one of our staff or experienced volunteers to meet you at Barrow Farm and explain in more detail what to expect.
Many of our volunteers comment on the sense of fulfilment and enjoyment they get from helping our participants.

Please think about joining our team.

What skills do I need?

You don't need to be knowledgeable about horses as full training is provided, but if you are and want to get more involved with the horses then there may be opportunities to help on the yard.

If helping out on rides isn't for you then there are a number of other ways to get involved and support the work of Barrow Farm.

We are currently looking for people to help with land and building maintenance and gardening.
