Would you like to volunteer to support learning disabled adults and young people during their school/college holidays - which will also be your college/school holidays!?
During holidays/half terms (especially summer break) we support school age young people with learning disabilities for our School Holiday Club. You could help support our SHC Trainees on the allotments, or in the café, or preserves manufacturing kitchen. You may be interested in working in 'Woody' our woodworking workshop, or taking part in the development of our conservation areas on our 1.5 acre site, here at Sailship.
Your role will be to 'peer mentor' the young people we have on site, during their school holidays. You will not be a 'carer'. Your support will be that of a 'buddy', someone who will help to motivate and help others to enjoy their time with us. Sailship qualified and experienced staff will always be on hand to support your journey of volunteering with us. There's always lots to do and this type of volunteering can support your application to university, or your reference for an apprenticeship, or other employment. Sailship will provide that reference to any volunteer who completes their pledge to Sailship.
You will need to be a patient and friendly person, happy to help someone who isn't able to carry out tasks as quickly as you might and who will need your support to do so.
If you are studying towards a qualification in Health & Social Care you may find this role rewarding and useful to your studies. If you are studying for a horticulture qualification, or a catering qualification, you could find that volunteering at Sailship will go towards your learning, or perhaps help with a project? However, you do not need to be studying any specific subject. In fact, you do not need to be working towards any FE qualifications! You might just want something meaningful and satisfying to do during your break. If this sounds like you, we would be very pleased to hear from you.
