Summer Reading Challenge Volunteer 2026

For Southend Libraries

Register your interest

Volunteers will support the annual Summer Reading Challenge by talking with children about the books they have read and encouraging them to keep reading over the summer holidays. They will reward children for their progress with stickers, certificates and medals, and explain how the challenge works in a friendly, informal way. Volunteers will be based in their nearest local library, receive training, and commit to at least 10 days during the school summer holidays, helping to create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for children and families.

Volunteering offers a rewarding opportunity to gain valuable experience, develop communication and interpersonal skills, and build confidence. It is a great way to give back to the local community while supporting children’s learning and enjoyment of reading. Previous volunteers have found the role enjoyable and worthwhile, feeling appreciated by families and library staff, and many have valued the experience as preparation for future education or employment.

Volunteers play a vital role in the success of the Summer Reading Challenge by inspiring children to read for pleasure and helping to develop their reading skills over the long summer break. With their enthusiasm and encouragement, volunteers help bring the challenge to life, ensuring children stay motivated and excited about books. Their support enables libraries to reach more families and nurture a new generation of confident, enthusiastic readers.
