Volunteer Remote Telephone Befriender

Could a simple phone call make someone's week? Absolutely.

We're looking for warm, reliable and compassionate volunteers to join us as Remote Telephone Befrienders.

For someone experiencing loneliness, isolation or mental health challenges, having a friendly person who listens without judgement can make a real difference. You don't need to be a counsellor or have all the answers – sometimes simply being there and having a genuine conversation is enough.

What will I be doing?

As a telephone befriender, you'll make regular, pre-arranged calls from the comfort of your own home.

You'll offer a friendly listening ear, build a positive and supportive connection, and help someone feel less alone.

You might chat about their week, favourite TV programmes, hobbies, pets, music or whatever matters to them. It's about connection, conversation and kindness.

We're looking for people who are:

  • Friendly, patient and approachable
  • Good listeners with a non-judgemental attitude
  • Comfortable chatting on the telephone
  • Reliable and able to maintain appropriate boundaries
  • Passionate about helping people feel heard and valued.

No counselling experience? No problem. Training, guidance and ongoing support will be provided.

What skills do I need?

  • Active listening skills – the ability to really hear and understand what someone is saying
  • Empathy and compassion – responding with warmth, care and kindness
  • Good verbal communication - speaking clearly and confidently on the phone
  • Patience and understanding – especially during the emotionally sensitive conversations
  • Reliability and commitment – showing up consistently for scheduled calls
  • Awareness and boundaries – understanding safe and appropriate supportive relationships
