For Essex Wildlife Trust - Thurrock Thameside Nature Park
Register your interestTo participate in organised outdoor activities to help manage Essex Wildlife Trusts nature reserves for the benefits of wildlife.
As a Work Party volunteer, you will be assisting the Area Conservation Officer and the Thameside Ranger in managing this valuable habitat. We cut approximately 1.5-2 hectares of the reed bed on rotation every year. The arisings are raked up and burnt to prevent a build up of thatch at the base of the reed bed which over time causes the reed-bed to dry out and allow scrub to develop. Without this work, the reed bed would eventually turn to woodland and the species it supports would disappear.
