Animal Care Assistants Volunteers

For South Essex Wildlife Hospital

Register your interest

South Essex Wildlife Hospital receives hundreds of enquiries every year from people wishing to get involved and help. Of course we are very grateful for offers of help; however, it is very important that the right person is given the correct type of job to do.  Wildlife rescue often has sad outcomes, so you must be emotionally prepared.

Animal care assistants are responsible for:

  • Cleaning (pens, cages, bowls, buckets, floors, walls, sinks, equipment and patients!) - Everything needs cleaning; we have a high standard of care.
  • Ensuring the animals are fed and have the correct food – reporting to staff if an animal hasn’t eaten.
  • Tidying: storage space is at a premium, and things left lying around can cause accidents. Stacking newspapers, folding blankets and reorganising cupboards, for example, help the hospital run more smoothly.

We are looking for someone who can work as a team but also independently.  We require you to be able to work under pressure due to our organisational demands. Tasks change due to seasonal demands.  This is not a role where you will be “cuddling or petting” the animals; human contact is kept to the minimum.
