The Epping Forest District Museum tells the story of the people and events that have shaped the district’s rich history. The museum’s garden is located on Sun Street, Waltham Abbey and has potential to be a key public green space. We are looking for volunteers who have a passion for gardening to aid in the redevelopment of our garden by maintaining, developing, and protecting our community garden so that it can be enjoyed by everyone. The Volunteer Lead will be responsible for representing and leading this team of volunteers with support from Museum Staff.

 

Responsibilities (may include but are not exclusive to)

·       Assist in the development plans of the garden and delivery of them

·       Oversight of any areas with regards to garden space and premises, reporting any concerns identified

·       To agree activities with the rest of the voluntary gardening team and museum staff

·       General gardening activities including watering, planting, clearing away weeds, cutting back vegetation and pruning

·       Interacting with visitors of all ages when visiting the garden and answering any questions they may have

·       Working individually or with other members of the volunteer gardening team to maintain and develop areas of the garden for the enjoyment of everyone who comes to the museum

·       Creating plant stock to sell in the shop


Requirements

·       Reliability

·       A basic knowledge of plant care and use of gardening tools

·       Willingness to help out with a variety of tasks

·       The ability and willingness to work out of doors

·       An interest in gardening

·       An ability to supervise a diverse range of gardening volunteers with support from Museum staff

You will need to complete our induction training programme before you fully begin your volunteer role. This involves core training in Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity and Disability Awareness. Additional training may arise dependant on the type of event or activity we will be hosting.

Availability Details

Volunteering will be on a weekly basis either Wednesday or Thursday morning TBC for 2 hours. We encourage a minimum of 6 months involvement to make the most of this role.
