Volunteers will need to come to Broomfield Hospital for at least one evening a week (7.15pm 10.15pm) where they will join a team who visit the wards, collect requests and talk to patients, then return to the radio studio to produce and present the nightly request show. As you would expect, patients can be of all ages and backgrounds. All are undergoing hospital treatment and therefore need to be treated with empathy and care. Volunteers will also need to take part in other radio station activities e.g. fundraising events and members' meetings.
No technical knowledge of radio is needed but we will need relevant skills and experience in the area the volunteer wants to help with. Volunteers should be able to treat patients with kindness, empathy and respect and abide by our Rules for Members at all times so that patients have the proper level of protection.
Benefits: This is an ideal opportunity to give something really valuable to patients who may be finding their stay in hospital lonely, uncomfortable and vulnerable - the chance to be a "radio friend", talk to people who appreciate some kindness, and play some music to lift their spirits during a difficult time. Volunteers who show the necessary levels of skills and aptitude can go on to have their own shows on HRC, and can get involved in other areas of the charity's activities e.g committee membership.
