Museum volunteer

The Brentwood museum is looking for volunteers to help with its regular weekend summer open season, to help maintain the collection and to help with the general running of the society.

We're a small museum based in the cemetery in Lorne Road Warley, just up the hill from Brentwood train station.

We have a Monday morning team who meet at 10am for two hours to work on the museum itself. If you are interested in learning more about how a museum operates, what goes on behind the scenes, for example accessioning or how to set up an exhibition this might be the volunteer role for you. There are a variety of jobs that are needed to keep the museum running, and the team we have on Monday would always welcome new members. They would be on hand to talk to you about what is needed and guide you through the process as you learn the skills yourself. This role is year round.

The museum itself is open on the first full weekend of the month, from April to October. We are looking for volunteers to come and help out on the Saturday and Sunday that we are open. You would be in the museum with two to three others, so not on your own, and would be there to talk to visitors about the exhibition or the articles on display and also about the cemetary too. Again while there is no formal training, you would be with more experienced volunteers who can tell you about the museum, and share their knowledge as you learn. There is no need to commit to every weekend we are open, unless you would like to, and you can do this as well as the Monday morning role too, but there is no requirement to do both.

We also have a talks programme which runs in the winter, a website and social media accounts, we attend local fairs and have a well attended summer garden party - all of which you can volunteer to help with too or to just attend if you prefer.

What skills do I need?

Not essential but any previous experience of working in a museum would be beneficial
