STRM – SEND the Right Message is a parent-led registered charity supporting families across Southend, Castle Point, Rochford and wider Essex where a child or young person (aged 0–25) has, or may have, special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
We provide practical guidance, early intervention, peer support and advocacy to families navigating the SEND system.
We are seeking individuals to join our Board of Trustees and help guide the strategic direction and governance of the charity.
As a Trustee, you will share responsibility for ensuring the charity is well-run, financially responsible and compliant with charity law so that it can deliver meaningful impact for neurodivergent and disabled children and families.
This is a voluntary governance role. Trustees support strategy and oversight but are not responsible for the day-to-day running of the charity.
Responsibilities include:
• Contributing to the
development and review of the charity’s strategic direction
• Ensuring the charity operates in line with its governing document and Charity
Commission guidance
• Overseeing financial sustainability and responsible use of charitable funds
• Monitoring the charity’s performance and impact
• Providing constructive challenge and independent oversight
• Safeguarding the charity’s assets, reputation and long-term sustainability
• Upholding high standards of governance, integrity and ethical conduct
Trustees share collective responsibility for the governance and direction of the charity and work collaboratively with fellow trustees and the operational team.
Time commitment is approximately 4–8 hours per month, including attendance at Board meetings and reviewing papers in advance.
We welcome trustees from a wide range of backgrounds.
Useful skills include:
• Strategic thinking and
sound judgement
• Ability to contribute constructively to board discussions
• Interest in governance and organisational development
• Willingness to support the charity’s long-term sustainability
• Commitment to transparency, accountability and ethical leadership
This is a rewarding opportunity to help shape the future of a growing community charity supporting SEND families.
Previous trustee experience is not required, and guidance and support will be provided.
