Domestic Abuse - Refuge Support

Next Chapter is a domestic abuse charity working across the areas of Tendring, Colchester, Maldon, Chelmsford, Braintree & Uttlesford. We provide free and confidential services to support people who are currently experiencing, or have previously experienced, domestic abuse. 

We are passionate about ensuring that every person has the opportunity to live their life free from domestic abuse 

As a Refuge Support Volunteer, your role will be to support the day-to-day work of the Refuge Domestic Abuse Practitioners by offering practical and emotional support to women and families fleeing domestic abuse. Refuge Support Volunteers provide a friendly, compassionate presence and help survivors feel welcome, safe, and empowered as they begin to rebuild their lives.

What skills do I need?

Essential 

 • Ability to work on own initiative 

• Ability to work well as part of a team and independently 

• Friendly, welcoming manner • Good communication skills 

• Understanding of issues surrounding confidentiality and safeguarding 

• Working in compliance with policies and procedures 

• A sincere desire to help people to achieve their goals 

• Ability to create a positive supportive relationship with the client 

• Non- judgmental 

• Strong listening skills 

• Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives 

• Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural or racial backgrounds 

• Ability to maintain boundaries 

 • Reliability, punctuality, and a positive attitude 

• Willingness to undertaken relevant training 

• A good sense of humour 

• Flexible approach with basic IT skills
